To start off my new ‘App of the Month’ series, I’m going to talk about an app called ‘TaskRabbit’ that I (thankfully!) came across a few days ago.
SUMMARY
- App allows you to hire someone for your daily chores i.e. buying food shopping, doing research or mounting a TV
- Since being acquired by IKEA in 2017, the app now includes an IKEA feature, where you can hire someone to assemble your IKEA furniture
- You can also lend your services on the app and earn money
- Register yourself as a ‘Tasker’, set an hourly rate and get paid to do ad hoc jobs!
- It’s free (minus the £20 registration fee for Taskers and 15% service cut)
I stumbled on this app by mistake, when I accidentally clicked a pop-up advert online and I was immediately drawn in by the premise of freelancing by essentially running errands. As obvious as it may sound, I was and still am shocked that this app hasn’t received more attention amongst young people in the UK.
The app, previously known as ‘RunMyErrands’, was founded in 2008 by American entrepreneur Leah Busque, who currently sits as Executive Chairwoman. The company is led by CEO Stacy Brown-Philpot who is also a member of the Board of Directors of HP Inc and Nordstrom.
It is fronted by the slogan ‘Chores Done Today’ which I think accurately represents what it’s used for. It certainly wouldn’t be used to hire people for performances or gigs, however, if you need help moving boxes around your house, cleaning your room, assembling furniture or removing snow from your front garden – this is the app for you.
These tiresome chores can be a burden when you have a lot to do, so I think this app is perfect to help you match with someone (especially if it’s last minute) who can do them for you, at a reasonable rate. There is also piece of mind in knowing that every Tasker (the people doing these tasks, of course) are authenticated by TaskRabbit through a formal verification process.

NICHE AUDIENCE: Students
As a recent graduate, I really think students would benefit from using this app, either to hire someone or become a Tasker themselves. Taskers are able to work at their own convenience and set their own schedule, which would work well around studying, as an alternative to structured part-time work. You also need minimal qualifications to do these jobs – although for the more complex tasks, experience would be helpful.
